How Many Grafts Do I Need?

Most men need 1,500 to 4,500 grafts. Use the estimator for an indicative range, then have it measured properly in person.

Most men need between 1,500 and 4,500 grafts. The number depends on the area being covered, your donor density and the density you are aiming for.

A graft is a follicular unit containing one to four hairs. This matters: 2,000 grafts might mean 4,000 hairs or 6,000 hairs depending on how many hairs each unit carries. Always ask a clinic whether they are quoting grafts or hairs.

These figures are a planning guide based on typical UK cases. They are not a quote and not a clinical assessment. Graft requirement depends on donor density, hair calibre, scalp laxity and the area measured in person. You receive a written, itemised quote after your consultation.

What determines your number

Visual comparison of hair transplant graft numbers and coverage
The same graft count covers very different areas.
  1. Area to be coveredMeasured in square centimetres at consultation. The single largest factor.
  2. Target densityNatural coverage needs around 30–40 grafts per cm². Dense packing can exceed 45.
  3. Donor densityHow many follicular units per cm² your donor zone carries, and how many can be spared safely.
  4. Hair calibreThicker hair shafts cover more scalp per hair, so fewer grafts achieve the same look.
  5. Hair and skin contrastLow contrast between hair and skin colour creates the appearance of more density.

Typical ranges by Norwood stage

Norwood stageTypical graft rangeUsual focus
II800–1,500Temples and hairline refinement
III1,500–2,200Hairline and temporal rebuild
IV2,200–3,000Front third, sometimes partial crown
V3,000–4,000Front and crown, often staged
VI–VII4,000+Prioritised coverage, donor supply permitting
Why more is not betterYour donor supply is finite. Taking the maximum possible in one session leaves nothing in reserve if your loss progresses. A good plan uses what is needed now and protects what may be needed in ten years.

Frequently asked questions

Is a graft the same as a hair?

No, and the difference matters. A graft is a follicular unit containing one to four hairs. Two thousand grafts might be four thousand or six thousand hairs. Some clinics quote hairs to make a number sound larger, so always confirm which unit is being used.

Can I have 5,000 grafts in one session?

Some clinics offer this. Whether it is wise depends entirely on your donor supply. Mega-sessions risk over-harvesting, which causes visible donor thinning that is very hard to correct. Most surgeons split large requirements across two sessions.

How accurate is an online calculator?

It gives a planning range, nothing more. Real graft requirements are measured by examining scalp area, donor density under magnification and hair calibre. Treat any online figure, including ours, as a starting point for a conversation.

What density should I aim for?

Natural-looking coverage is typically 30 to 40 grafts per square centimetre, which is roughly half of native density. The eye reads that as full because hair covers scalp rather than filling it completely.

What if I do not have enough donor hair?

The plan is prioritised rather than abandoned. The frontal third usually gives the greatest visual return. Beard or body hair can sometimes supplement scalp donor supply, and SMP can reduce contrast where coverage is limited.
