10 Hair Transplant Myths, Debunked

Hair loss attracts more folklore than almost any other health topic. Here is what the evidence actually says.

Evidence basedGenetics both parentsGrafts permanentNo shampoo cure

Last clinically reviewed: August 2026

Some of these are harmless. Others cost men years of treatable hair loss because they delayed acting on it.

The myths

  1. Baldness comes from your mother's fatherThe genetics are polygenic and involve both parents. Family patterns are a poor predictor for any individual.
  2. Hats cause hair lossThey do not. Neither does helmet wearing, washing frequently, or using styling products.
  3. Shaving makes hair grow back thickerIt does not change the follicle at all. Cut hair has a blunt end, which feels coarser.
  4. Shampoos can regrow hairNo over-the-counter shampoo regrows hair. Some improve scalp condition, which is a different claim.
  5. Transplants always look obviousThat reputation comes from punch grafting techniques abandoned decades ago.
  6. You need to be bald before a transplantYou do not, though loss should be stable. Early intervention often uses fewer grafts.
  7. Transplanted hair falls out eventuallyGrafts come from the DHT-resistant zone and are permanent. Surrounding native hair is what continues to thin.
  8. Stress causes male pattern baldnessStress can trigger temporary shedding. It does not cause genetic pattern loss.
  9. Massage or oils regrow hairNo evidence supports regrowth. Massage may improve scalp comfort, which is not the same thing.
  10. One transplant is always enoughMany men need only one, but ongoing native loss means some need a second. Planning should account for this from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any truth to hair loss shampoos?

Some contain ingredients that reduce scalp inflammation or improve hair shaft condition, which can make hair look better. None regrow hair in a bald area.

Do supplements help?

Only if you have a genuine deficiency. Correcting low ferritin or vitamin D can improve hair. Supplementing above normal levels does nothing for genetic loss.

Does frequent washing cause hair loss?

No. You may notice more hair in the shower simply because washing releases hairs that were already shed and caught in surrounding hair.

Can hair loss be cured?

There is no cure for genetic pattern loss. It can be slowed with medical treatment and its effects reversed cosmetically with surgery, but the underlying process continues.
